Greatest attacking trios in Premier League history

Who is the greatest attacking trio in Premier League history? The best attacking front 3 in The Premier League is open for debate, and here is our professional opinion that sorts out the best from the very best.

Ever since football transitioned into having three attacking players at the top, many players have taken their game to the next level in the Premier League. The “front 3” as we call them are integral to every attack for a team, including build-ups, switch of play and final delivery. So, who are the greatest attacking trios in Premier League history?

BestofBets takes a look at some of them as we rank the 5 greatest attacking trios in Premier League history!

Greatest attacking trios in Premier League history?

Best Front 3 in Premier League History

    5. Arjen Robben, Damien Duff and Didier Drogba (Chelsea):
When Jose Mourinho started a revolution at Chelsea in the mid 2000s, he chose an incredible mixture of pace, skill and strength as part of his three attacking players at Stamford Bridge.

Arjen Robben contributed immensely to the pace and skill aspect whereas Damien Duff and Didier Drogba were excellent with their sheer power and attacking mentality.

However, due to injury issues with Robben and Duff, fans would have wanted to see more of this trio. One reason this trio makes the top five is that they went unbeaten in the 27 games they featured together, winning 25 of them.

This attacking trio had a fierce combination of strength, speed, skill and creativity that gets them onto one of the best Premiership front 3 we have seen play. Some Chelsea fans would say this is the best attacking trio in Premier League history.

    4. Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero (Manchester City):

Pep Guardiola arrived at Manchester City in 2016 and changed the footballing landscape in the Premier League by enabling his team to play beautiful football. Often playing with a front 3 and clever creative players like De Bruyne and David Silva behind them, this was surely one of the most lethal attacking trios in Prem history.

This front three was an extremely talented trio of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero. They also had a backup trio which was extremely talented too in Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva.

Sterling, Aguero and Sane propelled Manchester City to the next level in their Premier League dominance, going on to score 100 points in the 2017-18 season, winning numerous Premier League titles and cup winners medals between them.

A few Man City fans would of course say this is the best trio in football history!

    3. Robert Pires, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry (Arsenal):
We know many Arsenal fans will be agitated seeing this amazing attacking Premiership trio trio at number three in our list. There are reasons to it in terms of formation as well as achievements when it comes to continental success.

Robert Pires, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry are arguably the three greatest players in Arsenal’s history. Henry and Bergkamp were voted Arsenal’s greatest ever players by their fans.

When these three legends were playing together, Arsenal’s formation was always 4-4-2 which meant Pires would take up the left side of midfield instead of being an out-and-out member of the front three. Henry played as a left-striker whereas Bergkamp played as a right-striker.

This attacking trio propelled Arsenal to two Premier League titles and an FA Cup and were part of the legendary “Invincibles” team of 2003-04.
The striking trio featured in 128 Premier League games together in which they scored an impressive combined 272 goals.

Amongst the best front 3 in football history for Arsenal fans, bit with Pires arguably being a midfielder we couldn’t put this attacking trio and a front 3 which might have got them into positions 1 or 2 on our list. Arsenal fans would say this is the best front 3 in football history.

Do you think this it the best attacking trio in Premier League history?

    2. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane (Liverpool):
There is good reason for Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane to be ahead of the legendary Arsenal trio above, and the main reason is continental success including winning the Champions League. The best Prem attacking front 3 should have Champions League winners medals.

Jurgen Klopp converted wingers Salah and Mane into inside forwards when he started his Gegenpressing era at Liverpool.

These three attacking players came up with some of the greatest attacking moments witnessed by fans in the club’s history, which translated into titles, as they won a Champions League in 2018-19, the Premier League in 2019-20, continental titles like the Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in 2019. They also won the FA Cup and the English League Cup in 2022.

This attacking front 3 could easily go down as one of the best trios in football history. But is the best front 3 in football history?

    1. Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez (Manchester United):
This might sound like an overstatement to lifelong Manchester United fans, but Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez can be classed as the club’s modern-day holy trinity, an embodiment of greats – in the same ballpark as Denis Law, Bobby Charlton and George Best.

The 2007-08 season especially saw this English-Portuguese-Argentine trio peak as they scored 79 goals and 30 assists between them in all competitions. They won the Premier League and the Champions League that season and Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or.

They stand number one is that they almost repeated the same feat in the 2008-09 season, reaching the Champions League final, winning the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and the League Cup.

Carlos Tevez, who completed his two-year loan at United, fell out with legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson over a permanent contract and left the club for arch-rivals Manchester City in 2009.

Cristiano Ronaldo went on to achieve his lifelong dream transfer to Real Madrid in a world record transfer deal at that time.

Wayne Rooney stayed on at the club and went on to become their greatest-ever goalscorer, and without doubt, a bigger legend than any other player in Manchester United’s Premier League era!

When looking at the best-attacking trio in Premier League history, we are including some of the best front 3 in football history.

  • Next Permanent Chelsea Manager Odds; McKenna, De Zerbi, Amorim Latest

Next Permanent Chelsea Manager Odds; McKenna, De Zerbi, Amorim Latest

Not even a week removed from the end of the Premier League season, managerial speculation is rife, headlined by the in-demand Kieran McKenna.

After the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino from Chelsea, the Blues have wasted no time in seeking a replacement and the Ipswich Town boss is hot property.

However, following Roberto De Zerbi‘s departure from Brighton, the Italian is also being heavily tipped in the markets.

    Ipswich rise

Having catapulted Ipswich from League One to the top tier in space of two seasons, Kieran McKenna is reportedly a wanted man by Chelsea.

Formerly part of Manchester United’s coaching staff under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the 38-year-old left Old Trafford for Suffolk in December 2021.

Taking the reins at Portman Road, McKenna led Ipswich to 11th in League One, and the season after guided the Tractor Boys to automatic promotion back to the Championship.

Against the odds this season, Ipswich then won back-to-back promotions to end a 22-year exodus from the Premier League.

Fresh from being scooping the League Managers Association’s top gong, moves on Wednesday have picked up, and McKenna is the new favourite to take over at Chelsea around 5/2 with Unibet.

Yet, despite near frenzied speculation, McKenna may yet elect to stay for one more season in Suffolk, given he has little to lose to his reputation.

Brighton also have their own designs, as short as 6/4 with some bookies to take over.

    Brighton link rekindled

The other leading contender to take the helm at Stamford Bridge is Roberto De Zerbi.

With more than a dose of irony, Chelsea being strongly linked with the Seagulls is becoming a narrative, certainly in the managerial department.

It was De Zerbi who took over at Brighton in September 2022, following Graham Potter’s decision to leave the club for his ill-fated tenure in West London.

    Embed from Getty Images

During his time with former club Sassuolo in Italy, De Zerbi transformed the fortunes of the Emilia-Romagna outfit, at one time pushing for a European place.

Previously linked with filling the shoes of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, De Zerbi would tick a lot of boxes with Chelsea fans.

If a move for McKenna does not pan out, his 21/10 odds with SpreadEx could shorten further.

    Outsiders

Of the longer prices that could fill the Chelsea void, might Ruben Amorim be the latest Portuguese manager to make the jump to the Premier League?

Primed to follow in the footsteps of Jose Mourinho from Porto in 2004, Amorim this past term led Sporting Clube de Portugal to their first league title in four years.

Like both McKenna and De Zerbi, the former international’s approach has earned plaudits across Europe, a 9/1 shot with BetUK for the post.

One longer shot that appears unlikely but is perhaps worth merit, Cesc Fabregas appears destined for a Premier League return at some point, now as steward.

Having led Como to Serie A this season, the former Arsenal and Chelsea man is the latest ex midfielder to switch to the dugout.

Any move at this time looks unlikely, and Cesc himself is likely to want a crack at the Italian top tier, but punters can back Fabregas to take the reins at 10/1 with BetVictor.

  • Premier League | Feisty London Derby on Cards at Stamford Bridge

Premier League | Feisty London Derby on Cards at Stamford Bridge

The Premier League returns this weekend and in fitting style.

Not one but two London derbies await and front-and-centre, Chelsea host Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

Two former league title rivals, more recent seasons have seen the two sides tread alternating paths.

Yet, whenever west and north London have met in the past, the sparks have flown. This weekend should be no different.

    A hint of form

For Chelsea, the season thus far has not a been a bright start to a new era under Mauricio Pochettino.

Indeed, as the Blues sit 11th in the standings, the club resume heading toward November in the bottom half of the table.

However, winning just once in their opening six league outings, Chelsea looked to have turned a corner. Of sorts.

Stopping the rot and picking up successive league wins before the international hiatus, a sterner test of their progress now awaits.

Indeed, Arsenal, level on points with Tottenham, could be top of the table come the end of the weekend, if results go their way.

And, having thumped Bournemouth before finally ending their Manchester City hoodoo last time out, the Gunners are in fine fettle.

So what sort of contest are we expecting on Saturday?

    Battle of Stamford Bridge?

From a punter’s perspective, the weekend’s clash should again bring more than a dash of capital spice.

In all Chelsea’s eight league games this term, at least five cards have been shown, as the Blues’ intense style of play ramps up under Pochettino.

That trend is likely to continue.

In the corresponding fixture last term, no fewer than seven cards were shown by referee Michael Oliver.

Chris Kavanagh may not be the most prolific of stewards in the bookings department, but the man in the middle can expect a busy evening, given sterner directives.

    Gallagher-Enzo 11/2 double

At the heart of Chelsea’s attempt to add some much-needed bite to their midfield, Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernandez are central.

As far as discipline goes, the two have shared four yellow cards across half their games played this term.

The Argentine, Fernandez, has been cautioned three times to Gallagher’s lone booking in defeat to Nottingham Forest, at Stamford Bridge.

In the case of Gallagher though, the midfielder received a yellow card both home and away against Arsenal last term.

    Embed from Getty Images

Bukayo Saka’s availability remains up in the air, but if the Gunners can unleash Saka, together with Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, the visitors will be set-up to break at pace.

That leaves the door open for cards to tot up.

For both Gallagher and Fernandez to be carded, an 11/2 punt with William Hill looks inviting.

Meanwhile, 7/2 odds for over 2 cards to be shown in each half is another attractive alternative.

Chelsea host Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday at Stamford Bridge, kick-off 17:30 BST.

  • Players who returned to haunt their former clubs

Players who returned to haunt their former clubs

As fans, we get attached to every player at the club we support and when that favourite player of ours leaves the club, a part of us leaves with them, but what happens when that same player plays for another club to defeat our club? It’s crushing! Today, BestofBets take a look at some top players who returned back with rival teams to haunt their former clubs, as they scored and led their teams to famous wins!

Players who returned to haunt their former clubs

    1. Eric Cantona:
After leading Leeds United to a Premier League title in 1992, Eric Cantona infamously made a move to Manchester United to create a dynasty in English football.
On his first return back to Elland Road for with his new team, Cantona was fined £1,000 by the FA for spitting at home fans.
In 1996, Cantona scored in the final minutes to help Manchester United claim a 4-0 win over Leeds with the Frenchman ending up celebrating right in front of Leeds’ Kop.
    2. Denis Law:
Part of the iconic Holy Trinity at Manchester United alongside George Best and Bobby Charlton, an ageing Denis Law joined Manchester City towards the end of his career in 1973, but he did make a historical contribution to the Blues’ history, scoring one of his most famous goals in his career. That goal was one of the reasons for Manchester United’s relegation that season.
    3. Frank Lampard:
Chelsea legend Frank Lampard left the club for a stint in the MLS before returning back to the Premier League with Manchester City on a loan in 2014.
Lampard bagged a late equaliser for City when Chelsea visited the Etihad in 2014.
    4. Andrea Pirlo:
One of the greatest midfielders of all time, Andrea Pirlo started out at Inter Milan, but wasn’t seemed quality enough before moving to AC Milan. There, he created history and rose to the level of the best midfielder in world football.
After a decade in Milan, he joined Juventus as a free agent and took his game to the next level. Pirlo made both Inter and AC Milan look foolish when he led Juventus to four successive Serie A titles.
    5. Emmanuel Adebayor:
Remember that incident when Emmanuel Adebayor scored for Manchester City against his former team Arsenal and ran the full length of the Etihad Stadium pitch to celebrate by sliding on his knees in front of the Gunners’ fans?
Arsenal fans hate him to this day. Enough said!
    6. Cesc Fabregas:
When Arsenal rejected the chance to re-sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, Jose Mourinho brought him to Chelsea and he helped the Blues win the league title, which included provided a match-winning assist for Diego Costa in his first game against Arsene Wenger’s men.
    7. Cristiano Ronaldo:
Manchester United let go of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid in 2009 and throughout his spell at Los Blancos, he got the chance to play against his former club in five competitive games. He scored in both legs as Real Madrid knocked the Red Devils out of the Champions League round of 16 in 2012-13.
    8. Robin van Persie:
Dutch striker Robin van Persie became “villain number 1” at Arsenal when he decided to join Manchester United as he wanted to win a Premier League title.
Van Persie scored twice against Arsenal in his first season at Old Trafford, but he didn’t go on to celebrate any of those two goals.
However, Arsenal fans continued to boo him and the next time he arrived at the Emirates and scored, Van Persie intentionally celebrated in front of the Gunners fans.
The Dutchman, eventually had the last laugh as he went on to win the Premier League.

  • Transfer speculation: Harry Kane 6/1 to join Pochettino at Chelsea

Transfer speculation: Harry Kane 6/1 to join Pochettino at Chelsea

As days in Tottenham Hotspur‘s Premier League history go, Sunday 23 April 2023 will go down as a dark one.

After Newcastle United inflicted one of Spurs’ heaviest losses in a 6-1 hammering at St. James’ Park, further misery has been heaped on the Lilywhites after a difficult season.

Having seen their north London neighbours fight for the title, the era of Antonio Conte has come and almost as quickly gone, with hopes of Champions League football heading in the same direction.

    Embed from Getty Images

Now, with just top-tier European competition having kept him at the club previously, talisman Harry Kane may have a difficult decision to make.

After pledging his future to the club repeatedly, his loyalty will again be tested this summer.

Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy has stated this week that Kane is not for sale ‘at any price’ and any move will require Kane to submit a transfer request.

Still around 1/2 to stay with Tottenham then, if Kane does ask to finally leave the Tottenham nest, where might his next destination be?

    Old Trafford bound?

If Kane does spread his wings, the most likely switch for the time being is at a 6/4 shot with BetVictor to make the move to Old Trafford for next term.

For United, having papered over the cracks at number nine for some time now, Kane would effortlessly fill the void.

Though Marcus Rashford has proved he can play the lone forward role, Rashford’s natural strength is as a support striker.

    Embed from Getty Images

Going forward – literally – with Jadon Sancho on the wing, the three could eventually form a formidable English front line for Erik ten Hag.

It currently looks still some way off, but seeing Kane turn out for the Red Devils would make a lot of sense.

    Pochettino lure remains for Kane

    How about a longer shot?

Chelsea might appear a stretch right now, but with Mauricio Pochettino close to being unveiled as The Blues’ new permanent boss, could Kane and Poch yet be reunited?

Though the west London side will also be without the lure of Champions League football, his former manager might yet be a big pawn in Kane’s decision.

It was Pochettino who brought persevered with Kane and turned him into one of the finest strikers around; there would be no issues in picking up where they left off.

    Embed from Getty Images

Chelsea, for all their money spent in the transfer market have – rather inexplicably – still failed to add a centre-forward.

That will change under the Argentine.

Though Romelu Lukaku could be set to make yet another return Stamford Bridge in the post-season, Kane making what would be a hugely controversial move south across the capital isn’t so improbable.

For that to materialise is short as 6/1, but is on for more than double that at 20s with BetUK.

    Bavarian alternative

Perhaps though, a fresh start on the continent is what Kane is after – it would certainly avoid any awkward moves to a rival club.

Linked for some time now with Bayern Munich, the Bavarians have not looked the same this term without the services of Robert Lewandowski.

Though Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting has ably filled the Pole’s boots for a time, Bayern are in need of a permanent number nine.

Kane, of all the front men around in Europe’s top leagues can make a strong case to being the perfect replacement for Lewandowski; an out-and-out, lethal target-man.

The main stumbling block here however, will be Kane’s pursuit of Alan Shearer‘s all-time Premier League goalscoring record.

Fresh from becoming Tottenham’s all-time record league scorer, Kane currently sits at 207 goals, just 53 behind Shearer.

It may only require two more full seasons for Kane to break that tally, but staying in England will, of course, be needed.

Nevertheless, if punters can see the England skipper seeking pastures new, PariMatch are offering 8/1 odds for Kane to be at ANY German club next season.

If matters in the boardroom at Spurs become somewhat ugly, this option for Levy would be wholly more palatable and as such, this outcome cannot be sniffed at.

10 worst loan deals in Premier League history

The Premier League is no stranger to loan deals in its history. Some loaned players turn out to be excellent whereas some turn out to be the worst! Loans are a move considered by clubs to be low-risk and high-return moves for a temporary period in a season in order to elevate their team’s performances or positioning in the league. Today, BestofBets take a look at 10 worst loan deals in Premier League history!

10 worst loan deals in Premier League history

    1. Saul Niguez (Chelsea):
Many fans thought Chelsea hit a jackpot of a loan deal when they brought in Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid on loan in August 2021 as they were depleted in midfield.
However, the move was a full-blown disaster. He made just five appearances for the Blues in the Premier League, from which he was substituted off at half-time in two games.
Chelsea paid a £3.4million loan fee and wages of almost £200,000 a week for this nightmare.
    2. Denis Suarez (Arsenal):
Spanish midfielder Denis Suarez spent the second half of the 2018-19 season with Arsenal, following a high profile loan move from Barcelona in January.
He made just four appearances for the Gunners, and we are pretty sure many fans remember his spell at the club at all.
    3. Radamel Falcao (Manchester United & Chelsea):
Failing at one loan spell is understandable, but managing to fail twice with two top clubs takes a whole new level of confidence.
Manchester United signed Radamel Falcao from Monaco for £6million loan fee plus wages of £265,000 a week in 2014. He made just 15 starts for the Red Devils, scoring five goals.
Despite this disaster, for some reason, Chelsea wanted to burn their hands and they signed Falcao on a loan in 2015.
At Chelsea, Falcao played 228 minutes of league football, scoring one goal.
    4. Alexandre Pato (Chelsea):
The second player from Chelsea on this list is Alexandre Pato. The Brazilian was touted to be the best in the world “on his day”. However, his “day” came just a few times in his career, and it was definitely not during his stint at Stamford Bridge.
He played just twice for the Blues, scoring his solitary Premier League goal from the penalty spot against Aston Villa in the first of those two games.
    5. Simone Zaza (West Ham):
West Ham paid a €5 million loan fee to Juventus for Italian striker Simone Zaza in 2016. Zaza made just 11 appearances for the Hammers which included eight in the Premier League and three in the EFL Cup, having failed to score in each of those games.
Yes, you have guessed it right. He became a meme!
    6. Gonzalo Higuain (Chelsea):
Chelsea brought in Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Juventus in January 2019. He made 14 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals in a series of underwhelming performances causing the London club to not attempt at making his deal permanent.
The Argentine joined Inter Miami in the MLS in 2020.
    7. Renato Sanches (Swansea):
Former Golden Boy award winner, Portuguese star Renato Sanches joined Swansea City on loan in his prime from Bayern Munich in the 2017-18 season.
Fair to say that he was a total failure for the Welsh club and later, in an interview with L’Equipe, he openly stated, “It was not my choice to go to Swansea. I was forced to go there. I didn’t want to go. I have respect for the club, the players, all the people I met there. I appreciated their humility.”
Sanches since then, joined Lille in 2019 before joining PSG in 2022.
    8. Arthur (Liverpool):
A typical example of panic buying, Arthur joined Liverpool from Juventus on loan in September 2022. Juventus specified that Liverpool had paid €4.5 million in loan fees, with an option to purchase the player for €37.5 million at the end of the one-year loan.
He made his Liverpool debut in a 4–1 Champions League defeat to Napoli on 7 September 2022.
Believe it or not, at the time of writing this article on March 30, 2023, Arthur still hasn’t played a single game for the Reds since Napoli!
    9. Jese Rodriguez (Stoke City):
Former Real Madrid star Jese Rodriguez arrived in England at Stoke City from PSG in 2017, and after just one training session with the team, he scored against Arsenal on his debut.
In December that year, then Stoke manager Mark Hughes made him sit on the bench and didn’t elect him as one of his three substitutes in the game, causing Rodriguez to storm out of the stadium.
The Potters were relegated at the end of that season and Jese returned back to PSG.
In June 2022, he told TuttoSport that the time in Staffordshire was “the worst adventure” of his career.
    10. Kim Kallstrom (Arsenal):
Arsenal signed Kim Kallstrom in January 2014 as Arsene Wenger thought he is exactly the type of midfielder who could help the Gunners’ title charge in the second half of the season.
However, just a few days before signing for the Gunners, Kallstrom was in Abu Dhabi and fell over while playing football on a concrete pitch.
“I fell badly on a small rock. I hit my back and had some pain,” he said later, as quoted by the Star.
“Obviously we were due to go back to Moscow the day after so we didn’t do any medical check-up there because it wasn’t too bad at the time. We informed Arsenal straight away that I had a problem with my back and that I had no idea what it was, so they just told me to come along anyway.
“It was a bit of a blur because the deal had to be done quickly. I came to London, we had the medical and we found out there were some problems but we arranged the deal anyway.”
He was out injured for two months between January and the end of the season in May, making just three Premier League appearances. Guess where Arsenal finished that season? Fourth! For more engaging and informative content like this, visit the BestofBets’ Insights section.
