Chelsea 2-0 Borussia Dortmund – Player ratings as the Blues claim Champions League quarter-final berth

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz meant that Chelsea have ensured their passage to the Champions League quarter-final with a 2-1 aggregate win against Borussia Dortmund after a 1-0 loss in the first leg.

The game started after a 10 minute delay and Chelsea were presented with chances right from kick off with Sterling missing a sitter, although the flag went up for offside and spared his blushes.

Dortmund eventually got into the game and tested Kepa to some extent. Chelsea then took the lead just before half-time. Chilwell crossed the ball to Sterling, who completely mis-hit his first effort, but regained his composure and blasted the ball through a crowd of players to tie things up on aggregate at the break.

The second half started at a fast pace before Chilwell’s cross struck Marius Wolf and Chelsea were awarded a penalty. Kai Havertz missed the penalty but it was observed that an encroachment was made into the penalty box before the kick, leading to the Blues getting another chance to take the penalty, which Havertz converted.

Dortmund tried to make a comeback but Chelsea dealt with all of their attacks to hand Graham Potter his biggest win yet as a Chelsea manager.

    Where: Stamford Bridge, London

First leg score: 1-0 win to Borussia Dortmund

Where to watch Chelsea vs Dortmund in the UK?

Fans in the UK can watch the game on BT Sport.

What happened in the first leg between Chelsea and Dortmund?

An inspired performance by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saw Chelsea losing 1-0 despite registering 21 attempts on goal. A half-decent performance at the Bridge in comparison to the first leg could see the Blues through, however, Dortmund will be confident of turning it around considering Chelsea’s fortunes this season.

    Chelsea vs Dortmund Team News

Reece James is expected to return after a minor issue led him to miss the clash against Leeds. Mount is suspended and also suffering an abdominal issue. Thiago Silva, Mendy and Azpilicueta are also missing. Kante and Pulisic could return to the bench whereas Aubameyang, Badiashile, Madueke and David Datro Fofana are all out of the Champions League squad registered by the club and so, are ineligible

Karim Adeyemi, who scored the only goal in the first leg will miss this one due to injury. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is also facing a late fitness test on his ongoing thigh injury, meaning Meyer could start in goal. Youssoufa Moukoko, Mateu Morey, Abdoulaye Kamara, Donyell Malen and Julien Duranville are also out injured, whereas Ryerson is suspended for this one.

Probable lineups for Chelsea vs Dortmund

Chelsea: Kepa; Chalobah, Koulibaly, Fofana; James, Kovacic, Fernandez, Chilwell; Sterling, Havertz, Felix

    Suspended: Mason Mount

Who will miss the quarter-final first leg if booked: Gallagher, James, Koulibaly, Mudryk, Thiago Silva

Dortmund: Meyer; Wolf, Sule, Schlotterbeck; Guerreiro, Can, Ozcan, Bellingham; Brandt, Haller, Reus

    Suspended: Ryerson

Who will miss the quarter-final first leg if booked: Can, Ozcan

    Prediction

While Chelsea showed great signs of improvement in their win against Leeds, they could have easily dropped points and against Dortmund, these issues will probably be easily exposed again.

The German side are on a 10 game unbeaten run across all competitions, including their win in the first leg of this game. We think, they will turn up and beat the Blues at the Bridge.

Chelsea vs Leeds preview, probable lineups, players you can bet on and prediction

Strugglers Chelsea will be looking to begin their comeback to winning ways when they host Leeds in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Blues are winless in their last five games and a loss here could lead to Graham Potter being sacked from his job.

Here’s our preview of this clash!

    Match Details:

    Location: London, England

    Stadium: Stamford Bridge

    Date: Saturday, 4 March

    Kick-off Time: 15:00 GMT / 10:00 ET / 07:00 PT

    Referee: Michael Oliver

    VAR: Darren England

    Team News:

Chelsea will be without their talisman Thiago Silva as the Brazilian is expected to be out of action for six weeks due to a knee injury he picked up against Tottenham, meaning Cesar Azpilicueta will lead the Blues. N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic are both back in training and could be on the bench for this one. Broja and Mendy remain out injured.

For Leeds, young midfielder Archie Gray has had a decent impact, but will be on the bench for this one. Stuart Dallas, Rodrigo and Adam Forshaw all remain out injured. Strujik and Sinisterra could be added last minute, however this has not been confirmed.

Head to Head record in last five games:

    Chelsea wins: 3

    Leeds win: 1

    Draws: 1

    Predicted Lineups:

Chelsea – Kepa; Azpilicueta, Koulibaly, Badiashile; James, Fernandez, Zakaria, Chilwell; Felix, Sterling; Havertz.

Leeds – Meslier; Ayling, Koch, Wober, Firpo; Adams, McKennie; Harrison, Aaronson, Gnonto; Bamford.

Last 5 games in all competitions:

    Chelsea – D D L L L

    Leeds – D L L W L

    Prediction:

Things could really turn ugly for Chelsea and their manager Graham Potter should Leeds United come with a result from the Bridge. The chances of that happening are not impossible as Leeds have shown they can score goals with the pace of Gnonto.

BestofBets think this one will be a 1-1 draw.

Players who you can bet on for a great performance:

    Raheem Sterling:

Chelsea desperately need Raheem Sterling to start firing if they are to make any kind of return to form starting with this game against Leeds. On his day, Sterling could be virtually unplayable, but such days haven’t yet come in his stint at Chelsea. We think the pace of this game could suit Sterling to create a major impact over a crucial 90 minutes that could save Graham Potter’s job.

    Illan Meslier:

There is no doubt Illan Meslier is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League at the moment. The Frenchman has been one of the biggest reasons why Leeds are not in the relegation zone at the moment. Against Chelsea, Meslier’s team will depend on him to keep out the threat possessed by Chelsea.

    Wilfried Gnonto:

If there is one player who has been the shining light in Leeds United’s season, it is Wilfried Gnonto. The pacy winger has been in the form of his life and is sure to disrupt a Chelsea defence that is weak on confidence and self-belief. Expect him to get a goal or an assist in this game regardless of the result.

  • Three Premier League fixtures to bet on this weekend: Chelsea, Everton and Man Utd in the spotlight

Three Premier League fixtures to bet on this weekend: Chelsea, Everton and Man Utd in the spotlight

With the schedule showing no signs of slowing down, BestOfBets looks ahead to the Premier League’s weekend action and picks out three eye-catching games worthy of your attention…

Chelsea vs Leeds, Saturday 4 March @ 3pm

How long can Graham Potter last as a losing manager at Chelsea before Todd Boehly’s patience is tested to the limit? Last weekend’s meek 2-0 surrender to Tottenham Hotspur turned the tide against Potter, in terms of the Chelsea fanbase. Many had wanted to stay behind the former Brighton manager, but a run of just two wins from 15 matches is bordering on the ridiculous. They’ve seen enough.
Chelsea simply have to earn all three points at home to Leeds on Saturday afternoon. But they’ll be facing a side who enjoyed a new manager bounce last weekend, with Javi Gracia winning his first game in charge against Southampton. The Whites will make it difficult for Chelsea’s multi-million pound squad and the visitors’ 9/2 odds (with most bookmakers) are quite appealing. It’s surely not worth backing Chelsea at 8/13, although the draw at 14/5 is a better value bet.
    • Our tip: Draw (14/5)

Nottingham Forest vs Everton, Sunday 5 March @ 2pm

You never know what you’re going to get with Forest, although one thing is certain – they’re a much better side at the City Ground compared to when they’re on the road. Steve Cooper’s side haven’t tasted defeat at home since September 16 and, although they’ve been horrific away of late – smashed 4-0 by West Ham last time out – it’s back to creature comforts on Sunday.
Sean Dyche, however, will see this as the perfect chance to set up a smash and grab victory for Everton. The Toffees have won two and lost two since his appointment, showing off a much-improved defence. But goals are a problem for them, with main striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin out injured.
This game screams ‘Forest to win to nil’, which is better value than the 17/10 being offered for a home win, or even a draw at 2/1. Everton are out at 7/4.
    • Our tip: Forest to win to nil (3/1)

Liverpool vs Manchester United, Sunday 5 March @ 4.30pm

In recent years it’s been difficult to consider Manchester United as favourites for any game against Liverpool. But Erik ten Hag’s brilliant revival at Old Trafford, combined with the wretched form of Jurgen Klopp’s side, means that is pretty much the case ahead of this Anfield Sunday showdown.
It’s hard to believe it was only last season when Liverpool beat United by a 9-0 aggregate scoreline over their two Premier League games. United were massive underdogs at Old Trafford earlier in the season when they stunned Klopp’s men with a 2-1 win.
The bookies are still a little sceptical, despite United’s Carabao Cup win and their superior position in the table. Liverpool are as short as 6/4 for the win on Sunday afternoon, with the draw 12/5 and United 7/4. In short, they believe all three results are pretty much as likely as each other. The formbook says different, though – so the value bet is on United.
    • Our tip: United to win (7/4)
