Brentford welcome Southampton to the Gtech Stadium on Saturday, as Thomas Frank’s side look to make it back-to-back home wins. The Saints are yet to register a point this season after losing their first two league games 1-0 to Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. Manager Russell Martin has been critical of his side’s start to the season, saying they haven’t got enough quality going forward.
Brentford began their 2024/25 campaign off with an impressive 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. With Ivan Toney completing his move to Saudi Arabia lastnight, Bryan Mbuemo and Yoane Wissa will have to step up. They scored the goals in this victory, and actually have a very impressive record when Ivan Toney isn’t playing. The pair scored a combined 21 Premier League goals last season and will be a handful for this Southampton defence.
As for Southampton, they have lacked creativity in the final third after failing to score against 10 men Newcastle on the opening day. They then failed to score at home against Nottingham Forest, creating an xG of just 0.26.
This is certainly a fixture that Brentford will be eyeing up 3 points in front of their home fans. The Bees lost on just 2 occasions against teams in the bottom half last season at home. Their record against newly promoted clubs was impressive, beating Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United at home – scoring 2+ goals in each of these games. In fact, they failed to score in just 3 home games last season and scored 2+ goals in 9/19 league games at home last season.
I can see this being another frustrating day out for Southampton. Brentford should have too much quality in attack, I can see them scoring 2 or more here in which would make it very difficult case for Southampton to take points off Brentford given their blunt start to the season.
